Theatre Ronin X HKPAX:

Ground Search
"Śūnyatā" - a theatre containing elements of Hong Kong literature and opera, presented in Cantonese

Opera has always been an important performance style for Westerners, and in recent years, incorporating Cantonese into opera is a brand-new attempt. Theatre Ronin, which is versed in exploring themes in Hong Kong literature, chose Hon Lai Chu's novel to create an opera theatre in Cantonese, visualising the words of her novel. Her language and sentence formation are flinty and poetic with a surreal configuration, and the opera itself has a spiritual and “larger than life” vibe, so they match well. Hon’s writing style is also the most similar to modern music among local literary works.

The Artistic Director of Theatre Ronin, Alex Tam and the composer Daniel Lo who is one of the most famous local composers in recent years, will share their ideas in adapting the novel of Hon Lai Chu into the Cantonese opera theatre, “Śūnyatā”. Famous Hong Kong opera singer Samantha Chong and performer Shirlee Tsoi will perform an excerpt of “Śūnyatā”.

Theatre Ronin introduces this performance with highly local colour to foreign theatre artists and producers, allowing Cantonese phonology to be appreciated from a “Hong Kong” perspective in the opera theatre and developed to a new level.
